How to choose an online PDF editor
Check four things before you choose: whether your file is uploaded; whether it handles your document formats and layouts; whether the result is truly redacted or only covered; and when you have to sign up or pay. Each takes a few minutes to test yourself.
Try editing a PDF with ORDO
Opens and edits the file in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. Free, no sign-up.
Open Edit PDF1. Is your file uploaded?
- Read the privacy statement: is the file processed on your device or on a server?
- Check it yourself: open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab and open a file. A large request leaving your device means the file is being uploaded.
- For anything personal or contractual, prefer a tool that processes on your device.
2. Test it with your hardest file
- Supported text: add a name or identifier, export it and check that the text remains readable and copyable. Check script limits on the language matrix.
- A form with no fillable boxes: can you type on the blank line?
- A scan: does the tool tell you there's no text to edit directly, or does it act as if there is?
- A password-protected file: does it say clearly what to do?
3. What is the result?
The difference is set out in the guide on covering vs redacting.
- If an edit looks seamless, copy the text out of the result. Is the old text still there, just hidden?
- If you need to hide something confidential, does the tool separate cover from redact, and does it check the result?
4. When do you have to sign up or pay?
- Can you download straight away, or only after signing up?
- Is there a watermark on the result?
- Is there a limit on file size, page count or uses per day?
How ORDO measures up on this list
- Upload: none. It opens, edits and saves in your browser.
- Supported text: uses an embedded editor font; unsupported writing and editing are disclosed.
- Scans: tells you there's no text to edit directly. ORDO doesn't read scans yet.
- Result: separates Cover from Redact, and checks the file after Redact before it lets you download.
- Price: free, no sign-up, no watermark in this public beta.
Is my file uploaded?
No. This tool runs inside your browser on this device. ORDO's servers never receive the file, and the page's security policy blocks it from sending file data anywhere.
PrivacyLimits worth knowing
- This is a general checklist, not a comparison of any product. Always test with your own files.
- ORDO is a public beta: try it on a copy before you rely on it for something important.
